Valhalla or bust, a star child goes out into the turbulent sea

One finds it easy to turn one’s head and look up at the night sky, then alone at night, or holding a lover’s dream, one wonders. You wonder what or even who is out there. My Nordic ancestors surely did it. That was so long ago but they surely did. Like what you do now. They wished to discover and voyage and discover the edge of the universe – It was the essence of their mythology. To venture from the safe shore and enter the tumultuous sea – to find – made them Viking. You may not think you have as curious a mind as a Viking and that maybe because of what genetic memory awaits release, what is inside you. But I have those genes and know why one must discover – like a Viking, nor will such a restless soul remain at home long. Just not yet you may say – Did I spark the restless warrior – Nor do you have a good reason to leave.

Let’s say you do. What if your place was so overcrowded and there was not enough food to go around, then what else could one do. You can’t stay at home and blame the king for his failure to thin the crowds. You say such a complaint is for the lesser souls. Then looking at the despair of the masses, instead and soon, you find in your heart a deep desire to leave your overcrowded rock. To go not west, out over the sea, but up up and away into space. Which is after all the final and endless frontier.

You wonder how will you get there? Becoming a good friend of Elon Musk’s is the easy way – he says he will die on Mars. But you don’t know him and lack the funds to join that club. However, a man must go where he must go, you will never be defeated in that enterprise. To reach the stars you learn all you can, the science the engineering. How to make electricity, produce oxygen, grow food in Martian dust.

What I am saying to you my reader is don’t worry. Be like a Viking and go. Go out onto the turbulent sea and discover. While you may die there isn’t it better to die with a sword in one’s hand and greet Odin with a smile and then know the joy of Valhalla. A Viking must die a violent death, die in battle and that is the only way, only way, to gain a seat at Odin’s table. Then one is in paradise, that is the only way to be there.
